Realtors have heard many statements about Radon over the years. I certainly have. I did not realize until about 6 months ago how dangerous and random this threat could be. I remember as a REALTOR in many years’ past, telling my clients that it is a natural occurrence in the earth and if you just keep airing out your home, it will probably be just fine. If you had a basement you may have to be a little bit more diligent in monitoring levels. I certainly never made it a point to recommend a buyer purchasing a home, add this to their inspection options. I also never had my own home tested as it was not considered to be a major concern.
As with most things, time, science and education have made us all aware of things that are coming to light as dangerous, but with knowledge and proper mitigation can become innocuous and nothing to be feared.
My education on this subject began with my introduction to David Coffey and a company called RADON1. David shared his passion and higher purpose for educating consumers, inspectors and real estate agents in the way to understand the threat, explain it rationally and divert the risk through good affordable systems “if necessary.” I say, “if necessary”, because so many companies in all fields only look at the potential of making money. This can lead to improper information, testing and mitigation. David and RADON1 will not recommend anything that is not necessary, will guarantee the results with a warranty and minimizes the cost to the best of his ability for the best performance.
